Flickr Commons, on of the world’s largest collections of free historical images, recently completed eight years! Consisting of over eight million copyright-free photos from 100+ libraries, museums, archives and galleries, Flickr Commons is one of the most impressive collections of old images in digital format.
Started in 2008, Flickr Commons rose to popularity at a good pace, with new images being added regularly, and more and more galleries and libraries contributing to its growth.
To mark the occasion, the US Library of Congress started a week-long countdown to the 8th birthday of Flickr Commons, wherein users shared historical images based on the theme “bridges”. You can check out the images here. Furthermore, the State Library of Queensland (Australia) too joined the celebrations and have a gallery of their own that you can browse on this page.
If you have not yet visited Flickr Commons, be sure to do it right now! It is a great assortment of wonderful images that showcase the growth of human civilization down the ages.
