Theme Documentation: Setting Up Maintenance Mode
If you are concerned about visitors coming to your site while you are setting it up and you don’t want them to be able to see it until it’s ready, you can put the site into maintenance mode. This will give visitors a brief message that the site in under scheduled maintenance and temporarily unavailable. To do this go to your WordPress dashboard click on “Plugins” and “Add New” in the left sidebar.
Type “maintenance mode” and click “Search Plugins”.
The first listing should be for the Maintenance Mode plugin. Click on “Install Now”.
You should get a message that it was successfully installed, and you can click on “Activate Plugin.”
Now, to set it up go to “Settings” in the left sidebar and click on “Maintenance Mode”. Then click on “Activated” and set a time for visitors to come back. Then click “Save”.
Now when visitors who are not logged in come to your site they will see the following message instead of seeing your site under construction.
When you are done with the site make sure you go back to “Settings” and “Maintenance Mode” and check “Deactivated” and save. This will take the site out of maintenance mode and visitors will be able to see the site.
